As Bihar gears up for the 2025 Assembly Elections, a major political controversy has erupted following allegations by former Union Power Minister and ex-BJP leader RK Singh. The former minister has claimed that a ₹62,000 crore scam has taken place in the state’s power sector, implicating officials from the NDA-led Bihar government.
In an explosive interview with ABP News, Singh alleged that the scam revolves around a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) signed between the Bihar government and a private company, reportedly linked to Adani Power, at what he described as inflated prices.
The Alleged ₹62,000 Crore Power Deal
According to RK Singh, the government entered into a long-term deal fixing the price of electricity at ₹6.075 per unit — significantly higher than the market rate. He claimed that the arrangement was designed to benefit the company at the expense of the public.
“This is a very big scam. An agreement has been signed with Adani that for 25 years, the government will make electricity ₹6.075 per unit. Adani has been given a lot of money to install a power plant at an inflated price,” Singh alleged.
He further claimed that the inflated contract would burden the state exchequer and ultimately make Bihar’s citizens pay more for electricity.
“They are giving more than ₹2,500 crore per year. In total, they are giving ₹6,200 crore in 25 years,” he said, adding that the overall scam value could reach as high as ₹1.4 lakh crore.
RK Singh Seeks CBI Investigation
Calling the deal a “fraud,” Singh demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter and urged authorities to book all officials and ministers involved.
“This is such a big fraud. The CBI should investigate and calculate the full extent of the scam. A criminal case should be registered against all involved — they should go to jail,” he said.
Singh also alleged that the company would not only recover its capital investment but also earn returns far exceeding the standard 15% allowed in such projects.
“Apart from the return on capital, they are being given so much extra. Who will pay for this? The public will pay. ₹1.41 per unit more — this is a very big fraud,” he added.
Adani Power Yet to Respond
As of now, Adani Power has not issued any official response to the allegations. Independent verification of Singh’s claims is also pending, and FinancialExpress.com has noted it could not confirm the former minister’s statements.
Political Reactions
The opposition has seized on the issue just days before polling. Congress leader Pawan Khera shared the video clip of Singh’s remarks on X, calling it a “self-indictment” of the BJP.
“Senior BJP leaders are openly demanding a CBI investigation into a scandal exposed by their own government,” Khera wrote. “I think there will definitely be TV debates on this sensational issue this evening. What do you think?”
Bihar Elections 2025 Timeline
The controversy comes at a sensitive time for the ruling NDA alliance, with voting scheduled to take place in two phases — November 6 and November 11. The results will be declared on November 14.
The timing and scale of Singh’s allegations have already sparked widespread debate, with analysts suggesting that the issue could influence public perception and campaign narratives in the final stretch before polling.
